Indigenous Women’s Fair Trade Weaving Cooperatives Tour from Chiapas, Mexico
Please join us on Wednesday, February 9th, at 7.30pm

Free event, wheelchair accessible, all are welcome to attend.

Indigenous women’s fair trade weaving cooperatives in Chiapas, Mexico, provide education, skills enhancement, and political, social and economic autonomy for women, while sustaining the traditional art of weaving. Representatives from the grassroots cooperative Jolom Mayaetik and the NGO K ’inal Antzetik, will visit Toronto to share their work and the context of their daily lives in Chiapas. Fair trade weavings will be available for purchase. English translation will be provided.

Ranjana Khanna will talk from her new book project on the subject of asylum in which she explores the changing use of the term and the places it designates. These include places of refuge to places of worship, and homes for the insane with specific architectural design to holding facilities for asylum seekers waiting to be processed. By considering the various forms of dehumanization associated with asylums, the book will trace the implications of the return of asylum today.

4. February 10% Venture: Come out to the Toronto Women’s Bookstore and shop on Friday February 25 and 10% of the day’s sales will go to the Elizabeth Fry Society. The Elizabeth Fry Society of Toronto, established in 1952, serves women in the criminal justice system. They are the only social service agency in Toronto with a specific mandate to provide programs and services for and about women in conflict with the law.

5. March Courses at TWB There's still time to sign up for one (or both!) of our March courses.
4-week course on Mondays in March: Getting' Knitty with It with instructor Jae Steele
This course is geared towards beginner, lapsed, and a-wee-bit-beyond-beginner knitters. There will be opportunities to make any of the following: toque, scarf, legwarmers, baby blanket or variations on any of those.
Monday evenings in March 2005 Monday March 7, 14, 21, 28 from 6:30pm to 9pm @ TWB

8-week course on Tuesdays in March and April: Writing the Short Story with Tamai Kobayashi
An introduction to the craft of constructing the short story (with some curious digressions). For beginners, beginners at heart or just the plain stuck and confused.
Tuesday evenings in March and April 2005 March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5, 12 and 19 from 6:30 to 9pm @ TWB Fee: $100 (No Refunds)

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
6. The first annual MPENZI: Black Women’s International Film and Video Festival will take place at the National Film Board of Canada, 150 John Street in Toronto, on Friday, February 11th, 2005 from 6:30 - 9:30pm.
MPENZI is showcasing 10 shorts from Black women filmmakers from Canada, the USA, the UK, Burkina Faso and Zimbabwe. Many of the filmmakers are from Toronto, including work from young women at Regent Park Focus. It will be an evening to celebrate the views, creativity, and talents of Black women in film. The 3-hour program is centred on the themes of Personal History, Memories and Identity, and includes a panel discussion and Q & A with filmmakers in attendance. Tickets are $8.00 in advance and $10.00 at the door, and a limited number of sliding scale tickets are also available. Tickets are on sale at Toronto Women’s Bookstore, 73 Harbord St. (at Spadina) and A Different Booklist, 746 Bathurst St. (south of Bloor).
The festival is wheelchair accessible. Free childcare is available by registering before February 7. To register for free childcare call (416) 533-8157

7. Eryn Dace Trudell presents her world premiere of “GRACE” February 24-27, 2005

Proceeds from the Sunday matinee fundraiser will go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Association.
A tribute to Eryn’s aunt Grace, who died too young from breast cancer, this work honours her memory, her amazing spirit, her engaging laugh, her generosity and her beauty.
