All I Work For
By Virginia Mak
Wednesday April 27 to Tuesday May 17
Toronto Women’s Bookstore, Storefront Window
73 Harbord Street

Words from the artist: I was told at school that working is to contribute to society. When I had my first job, I couldn’t fathom the idea of work aside from being a means of income-a rather indirect motive. As I grow older and
more experienced, I feel I must dig deeper. Do I work to ultimately meet my basic needs? What are they? Food, water, shelter or sex? Or does working meet my higher needs? Pleasure, comfort, security, freedom, knowledge, wisdom, aesthetic satisfaction, fulfilment of some sort, meaningful existence, or collaborating to build a community? Do I keep a certain objective in mind when taking on a job? Or do I regularly forget why I take on a job in the first place? What do I, as an artist or a person, work for?
What do you work for?
